Zerby, MBA, Ed.D Accreditation Programs Administrator Project Management Institute Four Campus Boulevard Newtown Square, PA 19073-3299 (610) 356-4600 ext. 1066 fax 4647 -----Original Message----- From: Walter Wawruck [ mailto:wawruck@intouch.bc.ca <mailto:wawruck@intouch.bc.ca> ] Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2001 2:46 AM To: Joseph Zerby Subject: Carry Over PDUs Dear Dr. Zerby, Three questions for you. Please confirm my understanding of how to claim PDUs for activities prior to the current cycle, (1 January 1999 - 31 December 2001). My re-certification date is January 1, 1995. I have the item from the FAQs on the PMI web site, copied below, and the instruction in the May 1999 handbook that ""PMPs who earned re-certification points prior to 1 January 1999 can apply a maximum of 45 units to the program". I understand this to mean that activities prior to 1999 shall be assessed and awarded PDUs in accordance with the current definition of qualifying activities under the five categories; as though the current definition were in force at the time of the activity. I understand there is no intention to "convert" points earned under the "100-points-in-six-years" or any other earlier systems to PDUs, or to award PDUs for activities which qualified then, but do not now. For example, in 1996 I could have claimed points for augmentation of experience or for being a member of a professional organization or a chapter; I gather that those points are now lost to me and cannot be translated to PDUs. Is my understanding correct? Under the PDP, you would be eligible to transfer up to 45 PDU equivalents earned between your Certification (or re-Certification) Date and 1 Jan 99, the start date of the PDP. If you had been accumulating re-Certification points under the previous "100 point" system, then you would be able to convert these directly to PDUs using the relationship 1 point equates to 1 PDU. This can be done all at once via the Activities Reporting Form by entering "pre-'99 Transfer Credits" as the Activity Title, the total number of PDUs being transferred, and "4" for the Category Type. You should also indicate the PMBOK Guide Process Groups/Knowledge Areas which were covered by the activities. Also, you would need to retain sufficient supportive documentation to substantiate your PDU claims in the event that you were to be randomly selected for PDP audit. Finally, the types of activities being claimed for pre-'99 PDU transfer credits should be similar in nature to those falling within the current PDP Category Types. For example, if you provided any volunteer services to the professional organization/chapter which you referenced above which were similar to those found under the present Category Five, you would be able to claim some PDUs for these activities. Another question. I presume that pre-1999 activities should be reported on the Activities Reporting Form according to the categories within which they fall (Category 1 for academic education, Category 5 for service to project management organizations, and so forth). Category three would not be used of course, since there were no REPs or program numbers before 1999. Is this correct? This approach would be fine as well, particularly if you would prefer your transcript to list each pre-'99 activity individually for your own personal/professional development needs. A final question. I serve as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Project Management Journal. I believe I would be entitled to claim 5 PDUs per year as a committee member in a project management association. Is this correct? Yes, up to maximum of 20 Category Five PDUs per PDP Cycle. Thank you for your help with these questions. Your truly, Walter A. I was initially certified under the 7-year certification cycle. My initial certificate read 4 April 1996 - 31 December 2003. Then, the Re-Certification Program changed to the Professional Development Program and I received a new certificate with the dates 1 January 1999 - 31 December 2001. Within what dates must my PDUs be earned? A. All 60 of your required PDUs must be earned in the 4 April 1996 - 31 December 2001 period. A maximum of 45 PDUs may be carried over from your initial certification period (4 April 1996 - 31 December 1998). A minimum of 15 PDUs must be from the 3-year cycle (1 January 1999 - 31 December 2001). |
